Coroner identifies woman killed in I-69 crash

UPDATE (June 1, 2023):

The Allen County Coroner has identified a woman killed in a Wednesday morning crash on I-69.

The coroner says that the 24-year-old Kentucky woman was pronounced dead at the scene after receiving “multiple blunt force impact” injuries during the crash.

Police were called around 3:30 a.m. however, the coroner’s office says it was called around 5 a.m. and notified of her death.

She has been identified as Megan Hazzard of Louisville, Kentucky.

The Allen County Coroner released the following:

On May 31, 2023, at about 05:00 hours the Allen County Coroner’s Office was notified of the death of Megan Hazzard, female, White, 24 years of age, from Louisville, Kentucky.
Megan Hazzard was involved in a single motor vehicle crash located near the 317.8 mile marker of I-69 at about 03:30 hours on May 31, 2023. Once extricated from the vehicle Megan Hazzard was transported to a local hospital where death was pronounced a short time after arrival.
An autopsy has been completed and the Cause of Death is Multiple Blunt Impact Injuries due to Motor Vehicle Crash and the Manner of Death is Accident.
Megan Hazzard is the 17th fatal motor vehicle crash in Allen County, Indiana for 2023.
The investigation continues by the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

ORIGINAL STORY:

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Allen County Sheriff’s Department says that a woman was killed and two people have critical injuries following a crash Wednesday morning. All traffic was shut down on I-69 northbound shortly after 3:30 when officers were called to the single-vehicle wreck close to Union Chapel Road.

Officials with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department said that when officers and medics arrived they found the passenger vehicle off the roadway. It had apparently hit a tree before coming to a stop. Three adults were in the car at the time. Two of the occupants were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. The woman who was driving at the time of the crash was pronounced dead at the scene.

Right now, it is unclear what led up to the crash. Police are still investigating.

The roadway reopened to one of traffic later in the morning but traffic remained slow for the morning commute.

The Allen County Sheriff’s Department put out the following:

On May 31, 2023, at approximately 3:30 A.M., officers with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area of I-69 northbound near the 317 mile marker, reference a motor vehicle crash with injuries.

Upon arrival, officers and medics located one passenger car, which left the highway for unknown reasons before striking a tree. There were three adults inside of the vehicle, all transported to local hospitals in critical condition. The driver, an adult female, was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The passengers, one adult male and one adult female, remain in critical condition at this time.

This incident remains under investigation.
