Today is National Voter Registration Day

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, the Fort Wayne Area League of Women Voters will host a National Voter Registration Day event at Jefferson Pointe in front of the goodMRKT store (4130 W. Jefferson) from 9:30 am-2:00 pm as part of a massive 50-state effort to register thousands of voters on that day.

The following was issued ahead of Tuesday’s events:

We are partnering with a local business to also highlight the launch of the Indiana Business Alliance for Civics (IBAC). Harry Cunningham, goodMRKT founder, offered to host this event by saying “I, in tandem with our partners from Jefferson Pointe, are excited to host the League of Women Voters on National Voter Registration Day. When voters know and are invested in how our government works, our community is stronger. We are proud to be a part of this very important nationwide initiative and look forward to seeing you September 19th. IBAC State Director Nathan Gotsch will be available on-site at 11:00am to discuss this new venture with local media.

Partner organizations will also host National Voter Registration Day activities around town on September 19th.

· Northeast Indiana National Organization for Women will be on Citilink buses encouraging passengers to register to vote.

· Purdue Fort Wayne NOW will be at Walb Union &/or Helmke Library reminding students that they can register to vote at their school or home address.

· The Fort Wayne (IN) Chapter of the LINKS, Incorporated and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will be at the Downtown Allen County Library.

· League of Women Voters of Fort Wayne will also be at the Barr Street Market on September 16th and 23rd.

To encourage informed voters, the Fort Wayne League also announces that municipal candidate and FWCS funding referendum information can be found on the LWV-sponsored Vote411.org website. Voters can receive customized information about how/where to vote and what candidates say about their priorities.

We encourage everyone to check to make sure that their voter registration is current. National surveys indicate that 40% of Americans are not aware that they need to update voter registration when they move or change their name. Visit indianavoters.com before the October 10th voter registration deadline to make sure you are eligible to vote.

Voters must also have a current photo ID issued by the State of Indiana or US government that conforms to the voter’s registration record. Student IDs issued by state universities are acceptable if they meet the criteria (including expiration date).

As a non-partisan event, National Voter Registration Day counts on thousands of implementation partners across the political spectrum. Starting in 2012 for the presidential election, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right – the right to vote.
